THE ESSENTIAL DISTINCTIONS

Residence, citizenship and tax.
Three separate questions.

Permission to reside, nationality and tax obligations should never be treated as the same thing.

RESIDENCE

Where may I live?

A residence permission lets you live in a country under specified conditions. Work, travel, family inclusion and renewal rights depend on the particular permission.

CITIZENSHIP

What nationality do I hold?

Citizenship has its own legal requirements. Holding an investor residence permission does not promise naturalisation. Ancestry-based claims are a separate route.

TAX RESIDENCE

Where do I have tax obligations?

Tax status depends on domestic rules, facts and sometimes treaties. Days present can matter, but they are not always the only test. A residence permit alone does not settle the issue.

BEFORE A MOVE

Plan across both countries.

Ask qualified advisers to consider your current country and intended destination, including income, reporting obligations, family ties and investments. Do not infer a tax-saving result from an immigration programme’s marketing.

For Portugal, older references to a five-year nationality pathway need to be checked against the May 2026 changes and any relevant transitional rules.
